In your first week at the Academy for Dental Assisting Careers, you’ll embark on your journey with a comprehensive introduction to dental assisting. You’ll learn about the essential role of a dental assistant, the various tasks you’ll perform, and the importance of your position within a dental team. This foundation will set the stage for your success throughout the program.
Focus will be on infection control protocols, including disease transmission, surface disinfection, treatment room preparation, instrument processing, and moisture control. Additionally, students will learn to conduct dental exams and use impression materials.
Students will learn the principles of radiation safety and the production of X-rays. They will gain hands-on experience in oral radiography, understanding how to safely and effectively take dental radiographs.
This week covers the identification and use of dental instruments, handpieces, and accessories. Students will also learn about restorative and esthetic dental materials and procedures, essential for patient care.
Students will explore pain and anxiety control techniques in dentistry. The week also covers prosthodontics, including dental implants, providing a comprehensive understanding of these critical areas.
Focus will be on various dental specialties such as periodontics, endodontics, oral surgery, pediatric dentistry, and orthodontics. Students will also learn to manage medical emergencies in the dental office.
This week emphasizes preventive care, including techniques for coronal polishing and the application of dental sealants. Students will learn methods to promote and maintain oral health.
Students will prepare for their careers by learning effective job search strategies. This includes resume building, interview preparation, and understanding what employers look for in dental assistants.
Graduates receive certificates in dental assisting and dental radiology, specific to Colorado and usually non-transferable to other states. Students can also pursue the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) certification, which is a separate process. These certifications prepare you to start your dental assisting career in Colorado.
